The Early Series

The key feature of the Les Paul Classic was it’s slim neck profile. The Les Paul Classic also had some other features true to the original: Some differences were the Les Paul Classic’s truss rod cover with “Classic” and pickguard engraved ” The Classic’s higher price was justified by its reissue-yet-modern vibe and was further enhanced by availability in several sunburst finishes, and in bullion gold on the top, sides, back and neck. There was no special effort to find figured maple for these so most of the tops on sunburst Classic models were plain. The Les Paul Classic specifications were adjusted during the early s. In many respects the Les Paul Classic was a more accurate reissue than the ’59 Les Paul of the early s. By swapping a few easily found parts:

I also intend to eventually add a comprehensive “case candy” section to exhibit the documentation common to all instruments of this era. It will be in the “Period Literature” section. All case variants are common to all models Standard, Deluxe, Custom.

Another resource for IDing and dating guitars is Gibson’s computer database, which catalogues scores of serial numbers from on through the present. “It doesn’t always date the guitar,” says Davidson.

He used it initially with The Starlite Wranglers and then primarily on tour and all but the last Sun recordings with Elvis. He traded it in on July 7, at Houck’s for a Gibson L5. Years ago I showed Scotty the guitar and he verified that it was in fact the guitar he traded at a Memphis music store for a new guitar he was purchasing. The guitar as when I had it was featured in the book by Lee Cotten titled: Roy Gibson produced the s from until 59 58 last production version but several made in 59 for a Summer show , reintroduced them in but has since discontinued them again..

They were essentially a fancified ES with Gold Bronze metallic finish and floral pickguard. Roy Scotty used to use a “Bobby Lee” style guitar strap with his guitars in the ’50s. He would attach it with the bottom strap button and loop the other end around the headstock, as was customary with many players at the time. The strap with the guitar now appears to be the one Scotty had originally, as near as he can tell.

Use this guide to pinpoint the Les Paul that matches up with your music, your style, and your budget. First Came The Clunker Les Paul had struggled for years with the feedback generated by electric hollowbody guitars when their volume was cranked up. In the early s he bought an Epiphone Broadway hollowbody and retrofitted it with his own hand-wound pickups and a rectangular steel bar body brace. Paul attached two wooden wings on either side of the slab giving The Log roughly the appearance of a conventional archtop guitar.

And Finally, the Les Paul was Born It took several years and the introduction of a highly successful solidbody electric guitar by a certain California guitar company to bring Gibson around.

This guitar, and another version that is documented in photographs of The Who on stage in Holland, 10th March, , are distinctive because they both have three holes on the body where the tailpiece has been removed – this version has three holes that form a triangle on the body whereas the other version has three holes in a straight line below the bridge. Photographs taken by Robert Ellis at the Odeon Theatre in Newcastle on 6th November, , the second of three nights in Newcastle during the Fallout Shelter Tour, show Pete Townshend prior to going on stage holding the guitar in this Lot [see photograph above] and photographs from the same night show Townshend on stage with the guitar [see front cover photograph].

The Gibson SG is the model of guitar with which Townshend is most associated. He used this model almost exclusively on stage between He tended to use SGs dating between , which are identified by their full black wraparound pickguard. They took the old SG off the market like about a year ago, so we used up every old SG in the country I raided every music store in the country practically, looking for old SGs When supplies of models began to dry up, he then briefly switched to pre models with the smaller pickguard such as the guitar in this lot.

Subsequently, at the end of , he switched permanently to using a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. Townshend often took off the tailpiece and tremolo arm on his Gibson SG guitars as, according to him, the guitars But that’s when I started to develop that technique because you didn’t need a tremolo arm. You could do it by just shaking the guitar

Here is a great user review of our Soapbar P90 pickup set. I recently installed a set of JBE Soapbars in a Les Paul and wanted to tell you about my very positive experience with them. I also have a very nice Les Paul sunburst, but could never get it to compete on stage with the JBE-equipped Strat. No matter what humbucking pups I tried I that guitar, it just could not sound in the same ballpark as the Barden Strat.

I tried many different sets of boutique pickups in that guitar, from high to low output and everything in between.

P90; Tele® Strat® Home; About The Gibson (2) PAF pickups that I sent to have rewound came back sounding very good tonaly and were balanced as in the one for the bridge was slightly hotter and the one at the neck a little less. I wouldn’t hesitate to have anything repaired. I couldn’t be happier. Thanks again.

Gibson L7 Guitar L7 As any collector, I love finding beautiful instruments and researching their history. Very rarely do I sell anything from my collection, but sometimes in order to keep collecting new items, older ones must be let go. In this case, I am offering my beautiful Gibson L-7 for sale. This page will display the entire piece. I purchesed this years ago in stunning condition. I believe I am the 3rd owner. Everything, including the finish is original. The tuners were changed years ago for newer Grovers and at one time it did have another tailpiece added there is a very small screw hole on the base rim in order to accomodate that tailpiece.

The tailpiece now is back to the original raised three-diamond motif. The binding is tight and the frets are original to this piece. Because it is over 70 years old, there are a few barely noticable bumps and dings.

Gibson SG Special P90

This is a fabulous guitar pickup. Read on and see if you feel the P is the type of pickup that has that special kind of distinctive sound that you are looking for. Just like a finely tuned race car relies on the performance of its engine, the sound engine of any good electric guitar is its pickups. When the P was introduced in , it was the most powerful single coil pickup made, and it probably still is. These pickups of course preceded the introduction of the humbucking pickups in , and they are capable of producing a very vintage sound.

I liked its design—it had great playability and was comfortable. It was a Stratocaster copy with three single coil pickups. One thing I didn’t like was the sound that came from the bridge pickup. It was too thin, and at that time I needed a pretty thick sound. So it sounded fat when played through Tube Screamer and Marshall amps. A few months later I replaced it with a single coil stack Humbucker and was happy with the results.

The good thing is that a good pickup can make a cheaper guitar sound good and a good guitar sound excellent.

Zephyr Blues live with V. They are overwound, but still retain the classic tone. When you really need to push your amp and want a big fat sound that doesn’t turn to mush, this is the right choice.

June 02, , Like I said, I ended up using a k volume on the bridge to take off some edge, and k on the neck. My next set will be the nasty 90 bridge and the low wind neck. I think the neck could use some un-muddying in the lows like most neck P90s, and the bridge could use a little bump. That isn’t unique to the Kinmans though, all vintage P90s strike me that way. I’ve tried about everything he makes at some time.

My feeling at this point RE the strat pickups is that, in spite of his over-the-top marketing and general arrogance, the Area line equal or trump them, are less expensive, and come without the unbearable condescension. His ‘unaged’ models are very similar in feel to the Areas, but to my ear and fingers the Areas tend to be a bit more fun to play. They take overdrive better and are just as nice clean.

For a while they were my go-to noiseless before the Areas. I’ll probably get a set of the unaged versions though so I can offer an informed opinion. DiMarzio nor anyone else has nothing that can compete with the P90hx at all. If you want a noiseless P90 that sounds and feels like a P90, get them, there is no other alternative.

For strat pickups, his are very good and could easily be mistaken for another Area model, but again, I find the Areas a little more ‘vocal’ and fun.

Gibson les paul guitar serial information The easiest way to find the year of manufacture of a particular Gibson guitar is to reference the instrument’s serial number of factory order number. In the s, Gibson standardized the serial number system that is still in use today. The typically eight-digit serial numbers on Gibson guitars are stamped on the backside of the headstock. The first and the fifth number combined show the year that the instrument was made.

The second, third, and fourth numbers show on which day of that year the instrument was made. The sixth number represents the location where the instrument was made, and the last two digits show the “production run” number. From the number is typically found on a decal on the back of the headstock, this should be an 8 digit number that can be dated by the 1st and 2nd digits as follows: The pattern is as follows: Prior to when the Kalamazoo, MI factory was closed, the numbers indicated Kalamazoo production.

Ranking numbers continued to indicate Nashville production through Ranking numbers for Bozeman start each day at and the electrics may start as low as the s. The sixth number is now a batch number- batch 0 starts at the beginning of the day, and once we stamp , the batch number will change to 1.

Today, it stands as one of the most popular and best-selling of all Gibson guitars. Its distinct twin cutaways, pointed horns, and beveled edges have made it one of the most inspired and iconic designs in the history of guitar-making. And not only is it one of the most eye-catching guitar designs, it is also one of the most functional and effective.

P Pickups Part 1 To the delight of very many guitar players, Gibson has been producing the P since It is a single coil electric guitar pickup with larger size and shape than Fender and other single coils, it looks somewhat like a humbucker. According to the Gibson website, “the lean and mean P offers a stellar combination of high output and biting treble response. By the end of the s it was the standard pickup on all Gibson models, including the Les Paul.

That alone makes me want to get some and give ’em a go! It’s hard not to compare one style of pickup to another when describing the sound or the tonality. So here we go with the comparisons. This comparitave analysis assumes that you, the reader, know something about the tonality of the item being compared. I apologize for this assumption, and will strive to create articles allowing for these comparisons to be technically explainable.

The single coil design of a P is somewhat brighter and more transparent than a humbucker, though not quite as crisp and hot as Fender’s single coil pickups.

Jun 19,  · A 55 P90 should have a black grommet – though a few 50s P90s reportedly had the tan grommet, which is found mostly on early ’60s guitars. Most old P90s will still have the light brown paper wrapper shown in Mike20s picture.

But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows.

The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years. To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine.

For the most part, it looks real.
