Strat Plus Series was introduced by Fender in and was the highest end production model next to Fender’s Custom Shop guitars. Production was stopped in July of There was some transitional Strat Plus’ in that were a mix of the new DX Strat series and the Plus Series.
The previous Fender Japan models were all Fender Squier models. The Fender Contemporary models were manufactured from to by FujiGen Gakki and these Stratocasters were designed to be Superstrats Super Strat with a Floyd Rose like bridge designed by Schaller and Gotoh and humbucking pickups. There was a lower priced Fender Contemporary Squier model produced as well. When CBS sold Fender to its current owners in there was a transitional period from to with limited Fender USA production resulting in mostly Fender Japan and leftover stock being sold.
The Fender Contemporary Telecaster models used the same tremolo systems as the Fender Contemporary Stratocaster models. There were also USA Contemporary Stratocasters and Telecasters which were totally different than the original Japanese models in terms of features and construction.

The Japanese guitar company made a name for itself on signature guitar models built for some of the most popular musicians of the time period. Identifying model years based on serial numbers for these ESP guitars can be difficult as the company kept few production records. ESP was originally created to build custom replacement parts for existing guitars, and did not begin producing its own models until The guitar company hit the shores of the United States in , setting up shop in New York.
ESP introduced its first line of guitars there for the U. The result would become the ESP Kamikaze. The company used Lynch’s popularity to release the Kamikaze as its first signature model available in the United States. In order to effectively date an ESP model built from to , ESP’s technical support staff will need the serial number of the guitar but, more important, pictures of the front and back of the headstock, neck and body. Remember, serial number alone is not an effective way to date these earlier models. ESP simply didn’t keep good enough records for that. Current ESP Guitar Identification Guitars currently in production and maintained in ESP’s catalog are much easier to identify, though serial number alone is still not adequate. ESP’s technical support staff will still require pictures of the guitar, along with the serial number to accurately identify the guitar for the customer.
